True / False / Not Given & Yes / No / Not Given: The Logic Rules for 100% Accuracy
Master the underlying logical rules to eliminate confusion and score 100% accuracy in IELTS Reading T/F/NG and Y/N/NG questions.
True/False/Not Given and Yes/No/Not Given questions are among the most challenging question types in the IELTS Reading test. Candidates frequently lose points by confusing factual contradictions with missing information, or by making assumptions based on outside real-world knowledge. To achieve high accuracy, you must adhere strictly to formal reading logic.
The Strict Logical Rules
TRUE / YES: The statement explicitly matches the information in the passage. Every part of the statement must be supported by the text (often using synonyms and paraphrasing).
FALSE / NO: The passage explicitly contradicts the statement. The text presents facts that directly oppose the claims made in the question prompt.
The passage does not contain sufficient evidence to confirm or deny the statement. The claim might seem reasonable or true in the real world, but it is not explicitly stated in the text.
The Danger of Over-Inferring
The single biggest trap in these questions is using real-world knowledge to answer the prompt. If a statement says "Solar energy is the most popular form of renewable power in Europe" and you know this to be true in reality, but the passage only mentions that "Solar power adoption has grown in Europe," the correct answer is NOT GIVEN. Always limit your evaluation strictly to the written text provided on the page.
