Summary Completion & Diagram Labeling: Grammatical Prediction Techniques
Master grammatical prediction strategies to solve summary completion and diagram labeling tasks accurately in IELTS Reading.
Summary Completion and Diagram Labeling tasks in the IELTS Reading module provide a major tactical advantage: you can use sentence grammar to predict the exact missing word type before you even scan the passage for the answer.
The 3-Step Prediction Strategy
Analyze the Sentence Structure: Examine the words immediately preceding and following the blank.
Determine the Part of Speech:
Is the blank preceded by an article (a/an/the) or adjective? $\rightarrow$ Target word is a Noun.
Is it situated between a subject and an object? $\rightarrow$ Target word is a Verb.
Does it modify a noun or verb? $\rightarrow$ Target word is an Adjective or Adverb.
Scan for Synonyms: Search the passage for paraphrased versions of the surrounding sentence keywords to find the matching term.
Adhering to Strict Word Count Rules
Always check the word count limits given in the instructions (e.g., NO MORE THAN TWO WORDS AND/OR A NUMBER). If your predicted answer is grammatically correct but exceeds the specified word count limit, it will be marked incorrect. Furthermore, ensure the extracted word is copied exactly as it appears in the text without changing its tense or form.
