How to Stop Losing Marks on Answer Sheets: Singular/Plural, Spelling, and Word Count Limits

Prevent silly mark losses on your IELTS Reading and Listening answer sheets by avoiding common spelling, formatting, and grammar slips.

Every year, thousands of IELTS candidates fail to achieve their target band score not because of poor comprehension, but due to avoidable mechanical errors when transferring answers onto their official answer sheets. In both Reading and Listening modules, a single spelling mistake or missed plural ending turns a correct answer into a lost mark.

Eliminating Key Mechanical Errors

Singular vs. Plural Accuracy: Pay close attention to word endings. If the passage states laboratory results and you write laboratory result, your answer is marked incorrect. Always re-read the answer in context to confirm whether a singular or plural form is required.

The UPPERCASE Advantage: To eliminate ambiguity surrounding capitalization, handwriting clarity, or proper nouns, write ALL of your answers on the Reading and Listening answer sheets in BLOCK CAPITAL LETTERS (e.g., SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT, not Sustainable development).

Word Count Discipline

Respect the instruction boundaries. If a prompt specifies NO MORE THAN TWO WORDS, writing the large building (3 words) instead of large building (2 words) results in an immediate mark deduction. Treat hyphenated words (e.g., well-being) as single words.
